Michelle Price has been volunteering with MND NSW for the past few years, and we’d like to share her story for this edition of our Volunteer Spotlight:
“I have been a volunteer with MND NSW for four years, in the Illawarra region of NSW. I began volunteering with the annual Walk to Defeat MND fundraiser held at Bulli NSW and from there went on to helping at the monthly support groups held at The Ribbonwood Centre in Dapto.
MND is very close to my heart, my husband Tony (who was also a father and Grandfather) was diagnosed with MND and passed away 15 months after diagnosis. Without the support of MND NSW we would have been left floundering in the dark.
The support, guidance, advise and care given to Tony and myself from MND NSW was immeasurable, making an incredibly difficult journey a little easier.
The MND journey is a difficult one but the MND NSW community is incredibly strong and can walk that path with you, showing support to people, families and friends touched by MND.
Becoming a volunteer with MND NSW was a decision easily made, our group shares a close bond and I love being part of that community, as difficult as it is I think it does everyone good to come and talk and share experiences in a trusted and accepting environment, talk is given freely and friendships are made.
In the Illawarra we are guided and supported by wonderful people - Karen is our MND NSW advisor and we have two social workers, Neetha and Kelly from SESIAHS.
As a volunteer you become a familiar face to members and hopefully someone that can be relied upon for a smile and chat, it can be hard at times but even in sadness the community which you've become part of supports you. I hope I make a little difference to my MND community and people leave the group meetings feeling a little brighter.
Becoming a volunteer with an organisation like MND NSW you become part of a community that prides itself in striving to help people with this life changing disease, I would recommend to anyone that MND has touched to think about becoming a volunteer with MND NSW.”
